Globicity – The Overweight Global Phenomena
When you go to your average supermarket you will see foods literally from all around the world. Pasta from Italy, rice from Asia, coffee from South America etc. It’s truly amazing the variety of food we now have available to us. Yet we now appear to be paying a price for this bounty of goodies.
The World Health Organization has coined a term for the obesity epidemic now sweeping the world. They call it ‘Globesity’.
- According to their 2016 estimated global figures, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Over 650 million of these were obese.
- Since 1980 the rate has tripled in some areas of North America, United Kingdom, Middle East, Eastern Europe, China, Pacific Islands and Australasia.
- Amazingly overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight in countries where most of the world’s population live.
The Department of Health in Ireland conducted a Healthy Ireland Summary Report in 2019.
The report found just over one third of people (37%) have a normal weight with 60% of adults here either overweight or obese. The sad fact is that even children are falling into this trap. According to a “Growing up in Ireland” national longitudinal study of five year olds, approximately one child in every five in is now overweight. Overweight children can also find it hard to lose weight as they get older, resulting in them having a life long battle with weight / body image.
Obesity – Is that fair?
Being overweight or obese also puts a person at risk of future health conditions like diabetes, heart disease etc. These figures paint a very gloomy picture of the future health of Ireland. UK figures are equally alarming with 62% of the population being overweight. The UK also has the highest rates of obesity in Europe. In the US approximately 70% of all adults are overweight. The larger food portion sizes may have something to do with this. The World Health Organization state a lot of this is down to people eating more energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats. This, combined with reduced physical activity, has led to increased obesity rates.
Don’t Become another Slimming Casualty
There is a bewildering amount of information now available for how best we can lose that unwanted weight. It can be very confusing to the average person when confronted by it. Sadly when we put much of what you read into practice, it doesn’t come up with the desired results. One of the big misconceptions in losing weight is that the person usually thinks that if they lose weight on the scales they will be in good shape. They don’t realise that often the first thing they lose is muscle.
The Perils of Losing Muscle
Muscle helps make up the firm tissue in the body – the parts that help give us shape. What’s the point in losing the parts you want to keep?
