The Mechanics of Nutrition

It is strange to think that we can often take better care of our car than we do of our bodies and nutrition. 

We normally get our car serviced regularly, change the oil, filters, etc and this helps it go much better and last longer. Our bodies work in a similar way.

Study Time Comes Round Again

It’s that time of the year again and schools and colleges are open. The new terms have started and students are getting back into study mode.

It’s time to dust off the mental cobwebs of the summer break and get down to the serious business of learning. 

This can involve learning in many different ways, through lectures, videos, reading books, internet searches etc. 

In doing so, we use our brain to help process this information and frame it in a form that will help us succeed in whatever field we are studying. 

For many, this can be quite taxing with long hours spent studying vast amounts of information. This can often result in tiredness and fatigue. 

To help keep us more alert or mentally energised many turn to energy drinks or copious amounts of coffee. 

While this can work short-term, long-term it can lead to many people being more highly strung and irritable and disrupted sleep patterns.

Obesity Increases Health Risks from Covid-19

Some very interesting news has come to light in relation to obesity and Covid-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, being overweight or obese can increase the risk of severe illness from Covid-19.

Is This The Answer To Stress?

Stress! We never know when it will hit? It could be work-related, relationship hassles, financial problems, noisy neighbours, loneliness, etc.

This can put a lot of pressure on our nervous system to a point where we find it hard to cope.

Stress symptoms vary with each individual. These can include: feeling uptight, anxious, irritable, lacking in energy, fatigued, have problems sleeping and digesting our food, where even simple tasks can become difficult.

Cortisol – The Stress Hormone

This can lead our body to release excessive amounts of Cortisol the stress hormone that helps give us the energy to deal with the immediate stress.* The problem is our body is designed to deal mainly with short-term stress (Fight or flight syndrome).

If Cortisol production is * constant it can have a very detrimental effect on the body. Stress symptoms like burn-out and exhaustion can often follow.

Stress Research

It is interesting to note that according to the Health and Safety Executive in 2014/15, stress accounted for 35% of all work-related ill health cases and 43% of all working days lost in the UK due to ill health.

To offset this we try and unwind by watching TV, surfing the net, etc.

Yet is this really doing it for us? Or are we one of those people that just can’t unwind and switch off? It can be like we are on a stress thread-mill where we can never seem to get off.

What can we do to help here* you may ask?

10 Steps to Help Cope with Stress

  1. Go for a 20 minute walk in nature every day.
  2. Limit screen time (TV, phones, tablets, laptops, etc) to 3 hours a day. It is especially important to avoid watching screens for one to two hours before bed. (Screens help emit a blue light that can interfere with the sleep–inducing hormone melatonin).
  3. Try and get at least two hours of direct sunshine or daylight every day. (This helps align our sleep regulating circadian-rhythm).
  4. Learn to meditate.
  5. Be less self-critical both of yourself and others.
  6. Count your blessings: List some of the really good things going on in your life: good friends, nice home, good shape, good health, great hair, ability to laugh at yourself, great job, great parents, great kids, great wife, great husband, etc. 
  7. Exercise 3 to 4 times a week: jogging, yoga, Tai-chi, home gym, etc.
  8. Eat healthy: fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish etc.
  9. Avoid junk food: cakes biscuits, sweets, chocolate, ice-cream and also sugar and salt.
  10. Go easy on take-out foods (no more than once a week) and only drink alcohol in moderation.

If it is loaded with negative influences it is like a red light. This then can seem like we are stuck in a mental strait-jacket that won’t allow us out to play.

Think about it for a moment – We can be away with our favourite person in our favourite place yet if our mind is not in the right state the best part of us won’t appear to make it happen. We can have all the right ingredients here but we still can’t make it happen.

How many situations are we cheating ourselves out of living in, by our badly loaded unconscious?

We may even think to ourselves I will move to another country and make a fresh start. Yet unfortunately, we bring the same mindset which usually then attracts the same type of situations to us.

Having this mental brake on in our mind can then severely reduce our quality of life.
